Any time that you have an empty property for over one month you will need a specialist insurance policy to cover threats like fire and theft. There are a number of reasons your property could be empty for this long and it’s important to be aware that regular home insurance policies will not cover you for lengthy periods.

It is important to be aware of the fact that at any time you leave a property empty or unoccupied you will need a special insurance policy – this is because regular home insurance will not cover these time periods. Your home could be empty for a number of reasons – for example, you might be waiting for your old property to sell before moving into a new home or you could be renting whilst work is being done.

Any period longer than 30 days unoccupied will mean that you will require a specialist type of insurance policy known as empty home insurance. This policy will cover threats such as fire and explosions and other similar hazards, and you can also have additional cover for theft and damage and subsidence as well as liability risks as the property owner.

To make this specialist type of insurance policy more affordable for home owners you can do things such as add door and window locks, fit burglar alarms and take other security measures. So if you have a property that is going to be empty for over a month for whatever reason then do the sensible thing and get in touch with an insurance company about taking out an unoccupied house insurance policy for complete protection. If you do not do this you will be liable for damages that occur as regular home insurance policies will not cover properties which have been empty for over 30 days.
